Lamenting and Praising: gifts from God to use but how?

What do the psalms teach us about communicating in these moments in life?

The Psalms teach, enable, and remind us of our relationship with God and how to be in this relationship. Part of that relationship is using laments and praises. However, we often are uncomfortable lamenting. How is it different from complaining? What is lost when we do not lament? And the other side of the coin, praising. Who are we praising? When does congratulations miss the mark? We will get into some Hebrew poetry, learn from the riches of the psalms and practice communicating our laments and praises with God and one another.

Pastor Amanda Olson de Castillo has served as Pastor of Creator Lutheran Church since November 2019. Originally she is from Minnesota and is a St. Olaf College graduate where she studied chemistry and math before a  semester in the Middle East where she first felt called to be a pastor. After graduating from Luther Seminary, she spent just shy of 10 years as a missionary pastor in Guatemala before returning to the States. Her husband, Horacio, is also a pastor at Creator Lutheran Church. They are parents to Abigail and Joaquin. Together they enjoy karate, exploring the Pacific Northwest, their dog, and their home in Buckley, WA.

Pastor Amanda interned at SLC in 2002-2003 and came back in 2012 to teach lay school at SLC.  SLC also provided us with a place to reconnect with the US when they moved to the US from Guatemala in 2013.

The retreat includes 2 nights at St Andrew’s House and all meals.  The cost is $270, scholarships are available.  Please contact Kim Grasmick if you are interested in a scholarship.
